Pieces Of Punk

What is Pieces of Punk? P.O.P. are random things, institutions, fashions, local business, and ideologies that help make punk what it is; kind of like putting together a puzzle. The location of all this is based in Southern California because, if you don't already know what happened, we're punk! Personally, I don't think a group of punks is complete without having at least one metal dude. Growing up, our metal dude was always wearing a different Cannibal Corpse shirt (not George Fisher Corpse mind you), and had a full mustache at 16. He would spend his weekends hanging out in front of Grossmont Center with an '80s cassette walkmen listening to Death until he got a car... then we wound up hanging out at Blue Meanie all day. The thing that stands out the most is the Day that Joey Ramone died. It was a hot Spring day (April 15th, 2001) and when I posted up at the hangout spot, corner of the library, metal dude is walking up in a leather jacket. I Ask him, "what's with the jacket man? it's fuckin' hot out", to which he replies, "yeah, but a good man died today." Fuckin A!

  1. you had a metal dude. we had a metal chick. shes still pretty metal now! my memory of joey dying was hangin behind the Toys R Us smoking when some one brought the bottle of High Ten and slowly starting spilling it while singing "Needles and Pins." Another mate said.. "Thats for Joey." we all cried punk rock salty tears!

  3. Not going to lie. This is the only reason I read this blog, no hate to any of the other people who contribute.

My group has had a progession of the token metal kid, around 2005-2007 we somehow picked up more than one for a bit during San Diego's short hardcore/thrash crossover flare up. Dude we have now looks straight out of a Nuclear Assault video; white high tops, tight super faded- almost acid washed jeans, band shirt rotation of metal bands I've never heard of much less can even read the name and of course the leather jacket or flannel.

All of these kids are armed with a steel fuckin' trap of a mind when it comes to music. They know every scrap of information on every band they have a recording of, even the most random obscure shit. They're always among the most legit members of any punk group that's worth its button and patches.
