My friend, wonderful musician & partner in speed eating competitions (Mr. Lane Barrington) recently left Hosannas to pursue his darling project The Ocean Floor. Brooklyn thrash dudes, Dinowalrus, bring the weird out to Cali supporting their new % Album (released not too long ago on Kanine Records). Their Cali touring pals, Tempo No Tempo, played the Che late last year & put on an entertaining, high energy show. Locally grown & smoked, Da Bears (now known as Dudes?) perform their phaser/wah wah/whatever the hell it is pedal ridden jams. Opening this lovely evening is David Barclay's brain child, The Endless Bummer (my fav!).
A week from tomorrow (Tuesday 3/23) will feature three rad bands from Stumptown USA performing at Che Cafe. For most all of you, all three will need proper introductions...so here we go:
Y La Bamba http://myspace.com/ylabamba These folks sit somewhere between Cat Power & Fleet Foxes. Super mellow tunes w/ emotion. They released their debut album 'Alida St.' in late 2008 (you can stream the entire record here). I heard somewhere or another that they've been sitting on a new album for quite sometime now & will be releasing it soon via Tender Loving Empire.
Wampire http://myspace.com/wampiremusic Wampire = two dudes who like to party & dance a whole lot. If I had to put them in some sort of a genre, it'd be lo-fi '80s pop. Not quite sure what their newest release is, but looks to be a cassette. Check out the video below made by IntoTheWoods. Wonderful idea - perfectly executed!
White Fang http://myspace.com/whtfng Loud, trashy, dirt punx on Marriage Records. 'Whatever' LP is their debut release & it sounds like garbage. I don't have a whole lot of info about these dudes, but do know they're one of Portland's favs. I found this quote on their myspace page that I found pretty funny - "All those drummers don't even play in synch or keep regular time."-The Oregonian - this should be an interesting set...

Tonight marks the last night of a very successful west coast tour for Boomsnake. Las Vegas post-hardcore darlings Caravels will be opening & Weatherbox (just recently sponsored by Rumplemintz) will close. Young peeps, this is your chance to pick up the new Boomsnake 7"!
NYC's Grooms are coming to town tonight for a show at the Che Cafe. I must admit, I found these indie rocker homies on Stereogum, but I don't think it's such a bad thing. Better there than anywhere else (as far as I'm concerned). I agree with Seth Combs 'obvious influences' describing Grooms below & would add a pinch of trippy-dude Sonic Youth. I anticipate a killer show!
FYI: Life Deposits just yesterday dropped off the bill due to a family emergency, so the kind dudes of your favorite Weatherbox will be opening the show.

PLAN A: Drug Wars, Grooms, Tempo No Tempo, Weatherbox @ Che Café. Tactfully balancing the line between garage and hardcore, Drug Wars remain one of the best local live bands. And Brooklyn’s Grooms manage to transcend obvious influences (Pavement, Broken Social Scene) to create smart indie rock that’s both tribute and novel (see video below).
Playing tonite at the Che Cafe is a lil band from Omaha, NE called Little Brazil. Originally formed by Landon Hedges (ex-The Good Life & Desaparecidos bass player), this band also includes other associated Saddle Creek musicians. The last time they came through San Diego, LB were touring w/ Cursive. I made it to that show, but missed LB by about an hour or so (I would). Currently, Little Brazil has been on tour w/ our favorite north county dudez Weatherbox. LB joined the tour half-way through in the mid-west & tonite is the closing date to the tour.
San Diego Reader said this at some point: "[Little Brazil] does early Death Cab for Cutie better than Death Cab did" Now...I dunno if I agree...but that is nice of those folks.
Check em out for yourself. If you like all that Saddle Creek pop/rock stuff, this is up yr alley.
I booked a lil show at the Che Cafe tonite. I'm stoked with the solid lineup..! Brought a couple bands from the north (ha..LA) to play. The Outline & Superhumanoids. Boomsnake & Get Back Loretta support these northern-mini-wizardz.
The Outline toured w/ Say Anything a while back in Europe & they also toured the west coast w/ some band from Japan that my friend Israel likes...just cannot think of the name...i hate when that happens. This Superhumanoids band must be from the '80. The two songs they have on their profile mirror '80s garage-groove-jams of that time frame. Normally, I am not a fan, but I really like 'Persona'. The other song 'Cranial Contest' is good as well.
