I am a huge Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) fan, and right now this heat wave reminds me of
The Midnight Sunepisode. One month earlier, the earth suddenly changed its elliptical orbit and is heading closer to the sun with every passing day. Most people try to relocate, "North", where it is cooler or have already died from the intense heat. Meanwhile, a prolific artist, Norma, and her landlady stay in their apartment building in New York City where they slowly watch life drain away. Norma's oil paintings start melting, and eventually someone breaks into her apartment and drinks the last of her water supply...she screams and then collapses. Suddenly, the scene cuts to a window shot of a blizzard outside. Turns out Norma is bedridden with a high fever, and she was just dreaming of the earth drifting closer to the sun. In reality, they are drifting away from the sun and it's growing ever colder until they'll all freeze.
Love that episode, love those old twilight zones in general!
