Just my take

So tonight was that monthly event we all look forward to, known as Mr. Rock Dude. Here's where I weigh in:

The Franks (LA): Decent!
These guys are just fun. I remember in high school I really liked the Hives... these guys aren't the So-Cal equivalent (lil bit too srrrrious) but close enough to spark comparison. Kinda-goofy, in that still-actually-for-real kind of way. Is that super non-descript?? The Franks could easily blend in with the rest of the general garage-rock-pop genre, but they don't generate hate within my person. Maybe it's because their other band, Superhumanoids, is legitimately pretty cool live. (I used wayyyy too many hyphens in that paragraph... Honestly, The Franks are ok by me.)

Death Eaters (SD): Fucking Awesome!!
People were dancing. When was the last time you saw an old school rock n' roll band make too-cool bar-goers move around a bit? I got the impression that these dudes just love good music, straight up, and are not gunna fuck around with any other bullshit (like what will garner them attention within the online community.) (and yes, this includes sillyass local blogspot.) I want to write a few paragraphs on how these guys embody: 1) the triumph of "know-how" over complexity in terms of songwriting approach and 2) the difference between straight-forward likability and pop... but basically it comes down to this: These guys know where it's at. Go to their next show. (Bar Pink. the 27th? or thereabouts)

Lights On (SD): Meh. Whatever.
OK so, admittedly, I was drunk at this point in the night, but I was still paying attention enough and my general response was, "Eh, what the fuck ever." Weren't bad, but certainly weren't good. Maybe this impression came about because they had to follow Death Eaters (who, again, RULED) and I was intoxicated, but mostly I think it was because they were just plain boring. And they had like 6 people on stage and it sounded like an electronic 2-piece. Now, that IS non-descript. Just listen to them here and disagree with me.

  1. good review mr. preacherman. i thought lights on put on a pretty good show (they were rocking out & having fun). you were indeed wasted by the time they went on, so it would have taken turbonegro going on last to keep your attention!
